In 1984, a road-legal car capable of a 4.8-second sprint to 60 mph that could also turn and stop, and was almost practical, sounded like vaporware to most people. It wasn’t: the Sport Quattro, a shortened and improved ur-Quattro, was that car. Not that many people knew about it—it was staggeringly expensive and had virtually none of the cachet of, say, a Porsche 911 Turbo or cars of that ilk in the status-obsessed 1980s. Also, frankly, it was a bit ugly to contemporary eyes. Thankfully we humans are equipped with hindsight, and that means that as Audi has emerged as a full-bore…

  • Carmakers Halt Russian Sales Amid Plummeting Ruble

    18 Dec 2014 | 12:57 pm
The Russian ruble is in a collapse, having lost more than 40 percent of its value since June. In response, General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, and Audi have all decided to temporarily halt sales in Russia to wait for more stable times, Automotive News reports. As of Tuesday, GM has suspended sales to its dealerships in Russia to “manage its business risk.” Once any outstanding Chevrolet, Opel, or Cadillac purchases have been delivered, GM will freeze sales until an undetermined date. Jaguar Land Rover has frozen transactions until December 19. Audi halted Russian sales on…

As of late, every automaker is boasting colossal weight savings realized from redesigning traditionally heavy vehicles using more lightweight materials. Land Rover claimed to have shaved as many as 926 pounds from the latest Range Rover—our scales showed perhaps half that savings—and Ford has trumpeted the 2015 F-150’s aluminum body as saving 700 pounds versus its predecessor. Now Audi’s all-new Q7 SUV arrives touting a curb weight that’s 717 pounds lighter than before. READ MORE ››

    Jens Meiners
    11 Dec 2014 | 3:00 pm
So, yeah, Audi is launching an über A3 in the form of the new RS3 Sportback. Powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine, it pays respect to Audi’s proud history of five-cylinder Quattro rally cars. We loved the previous-generation RS3 hatch, and this one promises to be even better. Power rises from 340 to 367 horsepower, and maximum torque is rated at 343 lb-ft and available from 1625 to 5550 rpm. The power is channeled to all four wheels through a seven-speed “wet” dual-clutch automatic; a manual transmission, disappointingly, is not available. Zero…
  • Plug-In Hybrid Version of 2016 Audi Q7 to Go Exclusively Diesel, Debut in January

    9 Dec 2014 | 2:35 pm
Audi is set to majorly electrify next year’s all-new Q7, but don’t expect to see a gasoline engine anywhere near that particular version. Parts of the world are starting to love plug-in hybrid cars—as are European car companies, which benefit from a very optimistic and heavily PHEV-biased Euro fuel-economy test cycle—and every time gas prices start to climb they love plug-in hybrid SUVs even more. But Audi isn’t concerned about gasoline costs for its next such model: It’s going to swim against the tide and give next year’s all-new Q7 e-tron a 3.0-liter diesel V-6 to partner…

Audi RS3 in Catalunya RedFor those of us who have bemoaned the A3's lack of power, Audi has answered the call with the new RS3, which has fellow auto writers singing praises for its quickness. Actually, those in the U.S. can still moan because there are no plans to send this model across the pond. *Sigh*Just how fast is this little beast? The five-cylinder 2.5-liter TFSI version offers 367 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque, delivering a 0-62mph time of 4.3 seconds, which is 0.3 seconds faster than the previous model. (I can only guess that die-hard racers could tell the difference.) Although I don't…

When Audi decided to come out with the new A3 that was geared towards people looking for an entry-level luxury car, I was a little skeptical. Late fall is a time for reflective glances, and Frank Sinatra’s rendition of “It Was a Very Good Year” comes to mind. Ever cool, never sentimental, Sinatra reminisces on “vintage” moments from the wry perspective of the later years in life. Could the Chairman be singing the theme song for the Audi TT?
